Amazon.com Review

A zippy little kitchen instrument, the Aerolatte frother is a smart way to make your own frothed milk for cold or hot drinks. Streamlined and reflective, the design is sleek and appealing, while its operation is simple. Just place the frother’s whisk head in a mug of hot or cold milk and turn it on. Frothing takes around 20 to 30 seconds and does not make a lot of noise. Powered by two AA batteries, the frother has a trim size and a self-contained construction that rinses clean between uses. Note that the frother does not generate steam or heat--to create frothed milk for hot drinks you must start with hot milk. Aerolatte also makes a satin-finish version of this product with a slim little counter stand for storage. The unit comes with batteries, and carries a five-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

I use this gadget for bringing sauces together, mixing custard and soups.
Perfect for when a sauce starts to break and you are in the middle of something else.

Submerge the tip and it mixes, partially submerge the tip and it brings air into a light sauce or makes whipped cream.

a really simple machine that works great... gives u cafe style milk foam. just be careful when you froth it, submerge it completely within the milk (and not leave it on the surface) otherwise it'll spill.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ice cream recipe book!, September 10, 2007

My kids bought me an ice cream maker attachment for my Kitchen Aide mixer for Mother's Day so I decided to buy a variety of recipe books, as I've never made ice cream before.

I bought this one, the Ben & Jerry book (also good), the idiots guide to homemade ice cream, and a few others that I picked up used.

Perfect scoop is our favorite! Everything we've made has been exceptional.

First off was the Chocolate Ice Cream which was my first attempt at a custard ice cream and the best we've ever had. Next we made the Rice Gelato (with Tangerine rind instead of Orange because that was all I had) which was very good also...sort of like a citrus scented frozen rice pudding.

Last weekend we made the Mango sorbet which was the best sorbet I've ever had, and it was so easy to make. Next up will the Banana Blueberry sorbet. It's a great book and if you're going to get an ice cream maker - buy this too! :-)

The ultimate ice cream book has finally arrived! And just in time for summer and the onset of the ice cream season (is there ever not a season for ice cream?) David Lebovitz, former pastry chef at Chez Panisse, hilarious and articulate [...], and cookbook author of several highly acclaimed books on desserts has written a gorgeous, informative, delicious book about ice cream, sorbets and granitas. The Perfect Scoop has over 150 recipes and over 50 stunning photographs. Ice cream recipes include the basics such as chocolate, vanilla, and butterscotch pecan, and branch out to aztec "hot" chocolate, apricot-pistachio, and lavender-honey. Papaya-lime sorbet and mojito granitas make appearances as well.

One of the things I love about David's work is that he takes the time to instruct us on the basics of whatever it is he is cooking. His Room for Dessert book has saved me over and over again with his explanations of the "whys" as well as the "hows" of doing a recipe. In The... Read more

This review is from: Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompaniments (Hardcover)
I've been using my icecream maker for several years now, and have had a couple of favourite ice cream books, but none come close to this one.

What marks this book out for me isn't just that it is full of marvellous icecream/sorbet/granita recipes which work, or the fact that the different flavour combinations will inspire you to experiment all the more yourself, or the fact that, like everything else David Lebovitz writes, it's eminently readable (witty, chatty yet authoritative on his subject matter - the perfect combination for a food book). These are all excellent reasons to buy this book. No, what really impresses me is the space given over to icecream accoutrements, including incredible detail on types of toffee and caramel sauces, icecream "vessels" such as differently flavoured cones, mix-ins which range from the crisp and crunchy (pralined almonds, buttercrunch toffee, peanut brittle) to the soft and gooey (homemade marshmallows, cookie dough). All meticulously... Read more

    Vietnamese coffee filter set

    Product Description

Preparing delicious Vietnamese coffee is quick, easy and doesn't require much clean-up afterward. The coffee filter is stainless steel and there are three parts (filter, screw-on damper, and lid). Simply place the filter on top of a cup, so it looks like a hat. Add 2-3 teaspoons of coffee to the filter, then screw on the damper so it's snug (not tight). Shake the filter a bit to settle the coffee. Fill up the cup about 1/3 with hot water then wait 20 seconds. Unscrew the damper 2 turns and fill the cup entirely with hot water. Place the lid on and wait a few minutes until the water has dripped though. Add a spoonful (or more) of sweetened condensed milk to the cup before or after you start the process. The final result is fabulous. Printed instructions come with the filter. The filter set is made in Taiwan of stainless steel, and quality is excellent--it will last for years. We offer Vietnamese coffee as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars prefer coffee filter set without the screw top, November 16, 2008

This review is from: Vietnamese coffee filter set (Misc.)
Ever since I came back from Vietnam, I have been using these small "French presses", or Vietnamese coffee filter sets. I bought 3 sets for one dollar (15,000 dong) in Vietnam, and soon realized that I needed more. So, I bought a few in the U.S. (local VN grocery store) and noticed that they come in different forms. This one has the screw in press, which I don't like as much as the simple press down piece that just sits on top of the ground coffee. It works great. The screw in needs to be tighten until you hit the coffee, but don't tighten too much (low drip, or no drip) and too little (too fast), but just right. I can't figure it out.

It is much more difficult to remove the screw part after the coffee is done. Worse, sometimes it can be that it is screwed in too hard, so the water does not drain through, but now you can't loosen it, because the hot water covers the piece. That's why the simpler version works much better. I have never seen this construction in Vietnam... Read more

And this little gadget does the job much better than a Melitta style funnel and paper filter. If you grind your own you'll need to experiment a bit with how fine to grind and how tight to screw down the tamper, but after a few tries you should have the cup of coffee you want.

I have 4 now. They are pretty cool for serving coffee when you have company. I don't think the online price is outrageous, but if you are lucky enough to live in a city with a Vietnamese market you can pick these up for $3 each.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, yet ubiquitous use, January 1, 2008
This review is from: Vietnamese coffee filter set (Misc.)
The Vietnamese styled coffee filter is really a nice bit of kit. It makes the often mundane act of drinking coffee into a ritual.

While its origins are south-east Asian, its has a cosmopolitan use that is quite underrated. If you're like me and have several different blends of coffee in your home to choose from, its nice to offer guests their choice of coffee without having to make several pots to do so.

You can alter the strength of the coffee by how tightly you compress the top filter in this apparatus. Thus enabling a "Lungo" or "ristretto" type of taste as you would find with espresso machines. This is however, not technically an espresso maker as espresso is made by forcing water through the ground coffee beans, while this apparatus uses gravity to distill the coffee.

Many people who first experience these will be in specialty Vietnamese restaurants, offered as a traditional "Cà ph su'a dá" (translated "Coffee milk ice"), but... Read more
